The Art of the Tray

Small in footprint, boundless in possibility — the tray is the unsung hero of a considered interior. One piece. Endless intention.

A frame for every story

In interior design, containment is everything. Without it, even the most beautiful objects become visual noise. The tray is the solution — a frame that gathers, defines, and elevates.

Think of it as a picture frame for your surfaces. What you place within it becomes a curated moment. What sits outside it becomes background.

Form follows feeling

The best trays are chosen for how they make you feel, not just how they look. A deep lacquered tray in black or navy reads as bold and architectural. A shallow rattan tray feels relaxed and organic. A hammered brass tray catches the light and brings warmth to any surface it rests on.

Consider the finish first, then the shape. Round trays soften a room — they work particularly well on circular coffee tables or at the centre of a made bed. Rectangular trays suit sideboards, console tables, and kitchen islands. Irregular or organic-edged trays bring something more sculptural.

The art of arrangement

A tray styled well follows a simple logic: vary the height, limit the palette, and leave space to breathe.

On a coffee table: a candle, a small stack of books, and a single object of interest — a piece of coral, a ceramic bowl, a branch of dried botanicals. No more than five pieces. The tray does the rest.

On a bedside table: a carafe of water, a small diffuser, and something personal — a piece of jewellery you remove at night, a river stone from somewhere you love. The tray makes this collection intentional rather than incidental.

On a kitchen island: oils, a small plant, a beautiful cloth. Functional and styled at once.

Material notes

Brass and marble are the enduring classics — they pair with almost everything and improve with age. Rattan and seagrass suit coastal and relaxed interiors. Lacquered wood adds a note of drama. Stone — travertine, slate, terrazzo — brings texture and weight.

Whatever material you choose, the tray should feel considered, not accidental. It is, after all, the frame for everything else.
