Three tan Jackson counter stools at an oak kitchen island with a marble worktop

The Kitchen Island Detail Interior Designers Never Overlook

Walk into almost any kitchen and your eye goes straight to the island. It's the room's natural centre of gravity: where coffee is poured, homework gets done, friends perch with a glass of wine while dinner bubbles away. And the furniture that defines it more than anything else? The stools.

Interior designers treat island seating as a design decision, not an afterthought. Stools are seen from every angle, often from the living space beyond, and repeated in a row they create rhythm, colour and character. Choose well and they pull the whole kitchen together. Choose badly and even the most beautiful cabinetry falls flat.

Here's how we approach it, featuring three stools we love.

Start With Height: Counter or Bar?

Before colour or style, get the proportions right. It's the detail most people miss, and the one that matters most for comfort.

  • Counter stools suit a standard kitchen island or worktop of around 90-92cm, with a seat height of roughly 60-68cm.
  • Bar stools are made for taller bar-height counters of around 105cm or more, with seat heights of roughly 75-80cm.

Aim for 25–30cm between the top of the seat and the underside of the counter. Allow about 60cm of counter length per stool, so a 180cm island seats three comfortably. And plan for a 25-30cm overhang so there's real knee room.

All three stools below have a seat height of 66-67cm, perfect for a standard island.

The Jackson in Tan: Warmth and Character

Tan is a designer's secret weapon. It brings instant warmth, a hint of mid century character and a lived-in richness that keeps a kitchen from feeling clinical.

Here, the Jackson in tan sits against warm oak cabinetry, a veined marble worktop and an unlacquered brass tap: a palette of natural materials where every element ages beautifully. The black powder coated frames add just enough graphic contrast to keep the look crisp, echoing the dark accents on the open shelf behind.

The design itself is quietly clever. A sculpted, enveloping back and a smooth 180° swivel make it easy to turn from the counter to the conversation, while the easy-care PU upholstery stands up to busy family life.

Style it with: oak, walnut, marble, brass, terracotta and olive green. It's also striking against navy or forest-green cabinetry.

Pre-order, with a lead time of approximately 8-14 weeks.

The Jackson in Taupe: Soft Sophistication

Same shape, completely different mood. In taupe, the Jackson becomes a soft, sophisticated neutral that lets bolder elements take centre stage.

Set against deep navy cabinetry, the taupe softens the drama of the dark island while the black frames tie in with the cabinet tones. It's a classic designer pairing: a strong, saturated colour on the joinery, balanced by a quiet, tactile neutral on the seating. Brass hardware and marble keep it feeling luxurious rather than heavy.

Style it with: navy, charcoal, sage, cream cabinetry, natural stone and linen. It's the easiest choice if you like to update your accessories with the seasons.

Pre-order, with a lead time of approximately 6-8 weeks.

The Anna Barstool: Natural Texture

If your kitchen leans towards the organic, relaxed end of the spectrum, the Anna is the one. A natural linen upholstered seat pad meets a warm wood finish, giving it a timeless, crafted quality that sits beautifully in country kitchens, coastal homes and modern rustic schemes alike.

Where the Jackson brings structure and contrast, the Anna brings texture and softness. It works with the natural materials around it rather than standing out against them.

Style it with: limewashed walls, painted Shaker cabinetry, honed stone, rattan pendants, stoneware and linen.

Dimensions: H102 x D55 x W47cm. Seat height 67cm.

Pre-order, with a lead time of approximately 16 weeks.

The Designer's Checklist for Island Seating

  • Repeat, don't match everything. A row of identical stools creates calm rhythm. Then let the stool colour echo one other element in the room, such as a cushion, a print or a ceramic, so it feels connected.
  • Contrast your cabinetry. Warm tones such as tan and wood sing against cool or dark cabinetry. Soft neutrals such as taupe and linen calm a bold colour.
  • Mind the backs. The backs of your stools are what you see from the rest of the room, so choose a silhouette you love from behind.
  • Light the island. Hang pendants roughly 75–85cm above the worktop, spaced evenly, to frame the seating. Explore our Lighting collection.
  • Keep the worktop styled but usable. One generous vase of foliage and a bowl of fruit is all it needs. Browse our Decorative Objects, Vases & Jars.
  • Think about practicality. Wipeable upholstery is ideal for family kitchens. Linen brings texture and works beautifully in calmer, adult spaces.
