I've been in this industry long enough to know when something is genuinely special. The Silk Route mural stopped me in my tracks the moment I saw it in our showroom. I actually rang one of my clients that same afternoon. "Come in," I said. "I need to show you something."

That's not something I do often.

This is a sweeping panoramic landscape - rolling hills, ancient trees, a quiet river catching the very last of the afternoon light. At 400cm wide, it fills a wall completely and utterly. And what I love most about it is what it does to the energy of a room. It slows everything down. You walk in, and you breathe differently.

Tall, elegant trees rise from soft earth tones of sage and taupe. Clouds drift across a pale, luminous sky. In the distance, hills fold gently into one another, and a still river mirrors everything above it.

There are no people in this landscape. That is entirely the point.

As a designer, the palette is what excites me most - warm greens, dusty neutrals, aged golds, soft greys. It's a palette that plays beautifully with almost every material: marble, travertine, walnut timber, brass, linen. This mural doesn't fight your interiors. It invites them in. It does the work, and it lets everything else breathe.

When I have a generous en suite to work with, this is where I get genuinely excited. A mural like the Silk Route deserves space - and space deserves a mural like this.

My starting point is always the bath. I want a freestanding stone or composite piece, positioned centrally in front of the mural. The oval form echoes the organic, rounded shapes within the landscape. Then come the fixtures: brass, always brass. Not chrome, not brushed nickel. Brass. It picks out the warm amber and gold tones buried in the treeline and creates a conversation between the wall and the room that feels entirely intentional.

I'd tile in cream Calacatta marble - floor, shower wall, vanity surround. Marble's natural veining moves in the same rhythm as the mural's hills and clouds. A walnut vanity with brass hardware grounds everything. Layer the lighting: recessed spots above, wall sconces beside the mirror, a subtle LED strip under the vanity for warmth at night.

Accessories? Keep them simple. White flowers - hydrangeas or peonies. A few church candles. One olive tree in the corner if the ceiling height allows. That's your five-star hotel bathroom, in your own home.

This is the look that surprises people most - and honestly, it might be my favourite of the three.

White walls. Concrete floor. A matte white bath. Black window frames. That's it. Nothing else competing for attention. And in the middle of all that stillness - this extraordinary mural, rich and dark and ancient-feeling, doing absolutely everything.

The contrast is the whole point. When you strip away every decorative element, the mural becomes art. It's no longer wallpaper. It's a painting. A statement. And the white room around it becomes the gallery that shows it off.

I love this approach for clients who tell me they want something bold but don't want the room to feel "busy." This is bold and completely calm at the same time. That's a very difficult balance to achieve, and the Silk Route does it effortlessly.

This is the scheme I'd recommend to most of my clients - the sweet spot between the grandeur of Look 1 and the calm of Look 2.

Travertine or limestone-effect tiles on the floor and walls give you warmth and texture without overpowering the mural. A round backlit mirror is something I specify constantly at the moment - that soft halo of light is incredibly flattering and gives the room an ambient glow in the evening that overhead lighting simply cannot achieve.

A floating walnut vanity, a vessel sink, a brass wall-mounted tap. A single sconce in aged brass. A trailing eucalyptus or a small vase of something green on the counter. The mural fills the feature wall behind the bath, and everything else supports it quietly without competing.

This is the bathroom that guests walk into and immediately ask: "Who did this for you?"

I've watched the design conversation in Ireland change significantly over the past few years. For a long time, the safe choice was grey. Grey tiles, grey walls, grey units. And look - grey has its place. But people are tired of safe. They're coming into our showroom now and they're ready to commit to something.

A mural wallpaper like the Silk Route is a commitment - but it's the kind you'll never regret. It references centuries of artistic tradition: the grand toile de Jouy, the Oriental panoramic print, the classical European landscape painting. And yet it doesn't feel dated. It feels timeless in the truest sense of that word.

Rooms should feel like somewhere. They should have atmosphere, a sense of story, a reason to pause. The Silk Route gives you all of that - and a bathroom you'll never want to leave.
